3 Unusual Secrets to a Successful Home Based Business

There are millions of people who begin creating a home based business with no desire for a job as the main vehicle for living free. Often, they plug into what is hopefully a good company with products of value, and set their view towards building a large organization. It’s a pure form of free-enterprize and without the burden of employees.

The rewards are plenty- freedom, flexibility, residual income, no boss- and it goes on from there. One has to wonder about it. If it’s so inviting, why do so many fail to get up the mountain so they can enjoy the view?

As someone who has worked (and played) with a home-office base for over a decade, I’m going to point out three things, that, if mastered, or at least managed, will get your successful home-based business results graph going in a strong direction. If this is what you’re up to, please don’t skim over these, but rather, take a good hard look at which one(s) have been tripping you up- or are most likely to get you off the track you set out on to begin with. While there are other pitfalls, here are three that are often overlooked.

1) Your boss now becomes the words you write for daily action. Yes, you can do anything you want, and don’t need to use a day-planner if you don’t want such a thing. The problem with that is if you have no daily checklist of things that are central to the plan, you probably have little idea of the daily actions that you are making intentional. CEO’s don’t get there without clarity and you are the CEO of Y-O-U. It’s a lot like throwing the bowling ball down the lane in a complete fog, and all you know is whether you heard the ball hit the gutter, or some pins smash. It’s hard to know what progress is being made if you don’t write your actions down with the pen or type.

2) Focus on things that are likely to produce the highest long term results. Don’t be among those who get lost in little things and delude yourself into thinking worthwhile effort is being done. Stay away from that pitfall. You can put an ant on a figure eight track and he’ll walk for hours, but by day’s end he’s still going in circles. Move away from your plan long enough to see what activities have or will do that with your progress. Look at your schedule by days end, and scan to see which items would cause most of your results. Take a look at how much time was spent that way, and how much with things of lesser importance?

3) Create a system of accountability. This can make or break things. Some need a lot, others need less and you’ll need to be honest. Has your day gone by, only to see that important things were getting lost in the mix? Been there. Perhaps you can tie in your main tasks with a daily reward of some kind. Perhaps you can tell someone that TV is off limits to you unless X is done. Use your imagination here. What could you put in place for you. A friend can serve this purpose, or someone else in business for themselves.

OK, it’s confession time for me. (And I hope it helps bring this to home for you). I put off writing this article for awhile and let other things take it’s place. At this moment I’m kneeling on two couch pillows as I write. Why, you ask? This afternoon I wrote in my daytimer, that I couldn’t sit in my office chair until I finished this article first.

I’m now taking liberty to construct a not-so-ancient Chinese proverb,- and I’m not Chinese. “Better to lose comfort and create motion, than sit still and be stuck”.” I’m referring to being stuck in a business going nowhere.
