When Recruiting For MLM You Are Not Just Selling
The majority of people in network marketing do not understand the difference between selling and recruiting. It is said that recruiting is just selling the program. This is not a truthful statement. It is the wrong mind set to think you are trying to sell a MLM lead. Selling and recruiting require two different mind sets because they are two different actions.
Selling is a one time event. It is the one transaction based. This means you are focused on the goal of selling the product or service. When you meet that goal of the transaction you are done with sales process. There is some contact after the sale but in general you are on to the next customer. Selling is really a dead end in the sense that you don’t spend much time thinking about the future with this customer. You may hope for another sale down the road but you don’t spend much time on that.
Recruiting MLM leads, on the other hand, is relationship based. In selling the close is the end of the process. When you are recruiting you are focused what will happen in the future. There is not a finish line when you are going to work together to build a business organization. When you sign a new member to your organization you are starting a relationship not winding it up. If your only goal is to sign a lot of people you will never build a deep organization.
Recruiting involves helping the prospect to see the potential after he or she joins and then helping them reach those goals. You are not just looking for a warm body, you are looking for someone to build a business with. In sales, you don’t care about who the customer is or what type of personality they have. Whether or not the customer has money is usually the only criteria. But in multi-level marketing the makeup of the person is all important. You want to be sure you are spending your time with someone who will benefit you down the road. You really care about the personality of the person you are bringing in to your organization.
A really successful mlm business person understands that recruiting involves a lot more than just getting leads to sign. They approach MLM leads almost like a marriage. That is an exaggeration, sure, but you have to look at it as a long term relationship. Understanding the difference between recruiting and selling helps you to build a deep organization.
